"Versailles in a Socialist France"- Chanel's Resort Collection 2013

Chanel's Resort Collection was set this year amongst three of the grand fountains of the Chateau de Versailles in France. A typically Rococo, Marie Antoinette setting, though punked up with music courtesy of M.I.A and the gold platform trainers worn by the models. Speaking of the show and the recent restoration of a left-wing government following France's recent election, Karl Lagerfield said, "I don't want the rest of the world to think of France as a sad, gloomy country. They won't come to buy our products"(source).

Nostalgic: Kate King by Arno Frugier for Interview Russia May 2012

Set on an abandoned estate, these photographs by Arno Frugier are reminiscent of Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1984 film, “Nostalgia”. A beautiful but haunting background for a high fashion editorial of Chanel and Valentino pieces.

Chanel 2011/2012 Cruise Collection

The Cannes Film Festival is coming soon to South of France (11-22 May), but the talk of the town at the moment is the new pop-up Chanel shop, showing Karl Lagerfield's latest cruise collection. Guests including Alexa Chung, Vanessa Paradis, Blake Lively and Clemence Poesy, were treated last night, to a 50-model strong catwalk show and a surprise Bryan Ferry concert, whilst seated on nautical blue deckchairs underneath white parasols.

Chanel, Paris Fashion Week AW'11

Karl Lagerfield's collection for Chanel this week was smoky, firey and full of attitude. Retaining the brand's ladylike chic and pretty aesthetic, the clothes had a biker chick feel with leather boots and boiler suits. The set of the show in Paris set of the atmosphere, with dry ice and black lava smoking below the wooden catwalk. The show had a rawness about it, both in the set design and the raw-edged tweeds and textural fabrics of the clothes. Often his past collections have looked youthful, pretty and girly, whereas this one was more androgynous and a little bit darker in theme. The move to a new apocalyptic look is a good move for an Autumn/Winter collection and I think it shows some of the simple silhouettes Coco Chanel was so well-known for.
