Beautiful Sigur Rós video by Ryan McGinley

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...
This tender and dreamy video of New York City was made by Ryan McGinley as a homage to his hometown for Icelandic band Sigur Rós's track Varúð. Perfectly timed with the music, a girl in a golden wig skips through the hazy concrete streets of the city, bringing a childhood innocence to urban jungle. Absolutely beautiful, both in sound and in film.

I went to see Melanie Pain last night at the the Royal Albert Hall as part of C'est Royal. Here's a cute video of her song "Bruises" recorded on a fairground ride.

The Pierces - Glorious

I became a huge fan of folk-band, The Pierces, since seeing them support Lissie last winter. A fusion between Fleetwood Mac and The Dixie Chicks, their catchy soulful tunes are becoming increasingly popular in the UK, with their album 'You and I' coming out in May and a UK tour starting soon.
See a previous post of mine about them: here and here

Song of the Day- Cults - 'Go Outside'

New York based boy/girl duo, Cults, will be releasing their debut album in the UK in May. Their dreamy indie/pop music was a huge success in the States, with NME and Pitchfork picking up their work from a website, where Brian and Madeline had submitted songs anonymously. 'Go Outside', the single which sparked all the attention, has a lovely summery off-kilter feeling and has been described by Cults as 'wrapping sinister tales within a sugar-coated shell'. Think MGMT but with the female vocals of Feist.

French Film Club: Gainsbourg

This weekend I watched 'Gainsbourg', a film charting the intriguing, eccentric and successful life of singer-songwriter, Serge Gainsbourg. I recently wrote another post about Gainsbourg, which you can see here: http://thestudio325.blogspot.com/2011/03/gainsbourg.html. The film portrays him as an imaginative and often troubled creative, from his childhood in wartime France, to his renowned music, and of course his cast of lovers, Greco, Bardot and Birkin. I think the film perfectly captures his extraordinary life; even if sometimes you don't understand his thoughts or behaviour, a larger than life alter-ego with a bulbous nose portrays and describes his innermost thoughts. This film casts to life a character who is often better known for his actions or words than for his personality and life.

Gainsbourg

From the 28th February to the 9th March, Sotherby's Galerie Charpentier is hosting an exhibition titled "Gainsbourg, Initiales L.G", which plays tribute to French singer-songwriter, Serge Gainsbourg. Consisting of a gallery of portraits, shot by some of the most renowned photographers, the exhibition remembers one of France's most inspiring artists. Previously unpublished portraits from William Klein, Helmut Newton, Pierre Terrasson, Claude Gassian, Tony Frank, Jean-Jacques Bernier and Yannick Ribeaut are all included. The snapshots of his life show both his passion for disguise and fancy-dress as well as documenting his then all-smiling love with Jane Birkin. The black and white photographs portray him as an intriguing character; one who often liked to put on the mask of someone else in front of the camera. For example this famous William Klein photo above, where his provocative side is revealed in a face full of women's makeup and a billowing cigarette. Some of the pieces are overlayed with Gainsbourg's own scrawled writing, giving the viewer a great insight into his mind, with the help of his butler who rescued the notes after his death in 1991.
The recent film, 'Gainsbourg', spans his life right from his childhood in 1940's Nazi occupied France, to his death at the age of 62. Growing up the son of Russian Jewish parents, he was forced to leave Paris at a young age and wear the yellow star singling him out. The success of his singing career began in the 1960s, where he created songs which often had a bleak background or a strong sexual theme. One song, "Je t'aime..moi non plus" even featured simulated moans and groans from Jane Birkin and was subsequently banned on various radio shows. On the set of the film, 'Slogan', he met his future wife, Jane Birkin, who he had one child with, Charlotte Gainsbourg. After Birkin left him in 1980, he became increasingly eccentric, appearing on television programmes drunk and suffering from a deterioration in health.

The Pierces

The Pierce's new song, You'll Be Mine, is the perfect soundtrack for today, after the inspiration of folky Rodarte. Sisters Alison and Catherine Pierce released their debut album in 2000. I recently saw them at Shepherds Bush supporting Lissie and wondered how I had not discovered them before!
